The Writers Room was founded in 1978 to provide emerging and established writers, working in any and all literary genres, with affordable work space in New York City.
For more than twenty-five years, The Writers Room has offered writers a tranquil, creative setting to pursue their work. A non-profit organization, the Room offers subsidized workspace that is available 24 hours a day, 365 days of the year. As testament to the productivity of the place, in 2006 there were more than four dozen fiction and non-fiction publications and several films optioned and plays by writers put into production.

Founded in 1978 by a group of writers, The Room has always been sensitive to the writer's need for both solitude and literary companionship in a dynamic city where space is at a premium. With its free WiFi and LexisNexis access, its reference library, its readings at the Cornelia Street Café, and its kitchen/lounge, the Room offers writers practical support as well as the creative stimulation of meeting other writers. There are no restrictions on literary genre: novelists, poets, biographers, journalists, screenwriters, and children's book authors are all welcome in the room.

The Room currently occupies a large, newly-renovated loft high above the corner of Astor Place and Broadway. When they arrive, writers simply choose one of the numerous desks and work as long as they wish. At any one time during the typical day there are no more than 35 to 40 writers on the scene. A number of Room writers have been long-term members, while others use it for six months or a year, then leave upon the completion of a book or project.

The annual fee, pro-rated on a daily basis, amounts to no more than the cost of a single latté - thanks in part to the support from the National Endowment from the Arts, the New York State Council on the Arts, and the New York City department of Cultural Affairs. In addition, a variety of private foundations, corporations, and individuals help to defray operating costs.
